Celebrating a Milestone of Hope

Five years ago, our world changed forever when our son was diagnosed with an intrinsic cervicomedullary brainstem glioma. We were told to go home and love him, given just 6 to 9 months to make memories. In that moment, I never imagined he would one day attend school, make friends, play sports, and grow into the joyful, energetic child he is today. A part of me broke that day—but we refused to give up hope.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital gave us that hope. They offered a light in what felt like an impossibly dark tunnel. Today, five years later, our son is a kindergarten graduate, a junior black belt in karate, a basketball player, and—most importantly—a vibrant, spirited six-year-old.

One of the most incredible aspects of St. Jude is that families like ours never receive a bill—not for treatment, travel, lodging, or meals. Every six months when we return for follow-up care, St. Jude ensures that we can focus solely on our son’s health and happiness. They provide a safe, welcoming environment filled with joy and support. The hospital includes fun play areas, music and art classes, a hair salon, and many child-centered activities that help kids feel like kids. Connor genuinely looks forward to his visits—he loves reconnecting with his friends and seeing his favorite nurses who have become like family.

Our family now lives in the moment, embracing every experience we can. We aim to show him all the beauty life has to offer. While the future remains uncertain and we continue to live in six-month increments between scans, his tumor is currently stable—the best news we can hope for.
