My son, Steven Calverley, was diagnosed with ALL Type B (low risk) on October 6, 2020 at 3 years old. He rang the bell on May 2, 2023 at the St. Jude affiliate in Baton Rouge and was told "to go live his life."
In early 2025, Stevie started having fevers of unknown origin and low back pain. I went to doctor after doctor only for doctors to tell me his bloodwork and everything was relatively normal and that "his body was fighting something but we don't know what." I was fearing the worst.
On April 27th 2025, at his 2 year followup at St. Jude in Memphis, Dr. Pui confirmed his leukemia had relapsed via bone marrow biopsy. We were devastated. The biggest life is unfair moment to Stevie and us. We had done all the right treatments - for 2 and a half YEARS. ALL TYPE B was supposed to have a 94% cure rate. What I didn't know that of those 94% cure rates, 15-20% will relapse.
We are currently at St. Jude receiving treatment which will be similar to last time but slightly longer - right about 3 years. Stevie will be 10 years old when he rings the bell again. He is 7 years old now. It is unfair. Nearly half his life on chemo and steroids. We just want him to be a kid.
I am on FMLA while my husband, Steve, works from home - which is currently Target House. I usually take Stevie to appointments while Steve works. We should be coming home at the end of June with the remainder of treatment done at the Baton Rouge St. Jude affiliate.
Although we have to fight this battle yet again, I am amazed at Stevie's spirit. He is not afraid - of the hospital, the doctors, nurses, no one. There are many kids here that are afraid and sad and just tired. Not Stevie. He is the most happy-go-lucky kid here!
Stevie is really thriving! He has become rather infamous with the other St. Jude kids and staff with his lego builds he does nearly everyday on the family commons floor! The family commons was created for St. Jude families only. Here, they have an art room, music room, 3d printers, cricut machines, craft rooms, event rooms, resting nooks, a salon, Cafe and playareas for the little ones! It is AMAZING!
St. Jude took care of anything and everything we needed in 2020 and the same is true now in 2025. There are more services for not only for kids but parents too! Stevie is attending school, summer camp and keeping busy with other children here and even getting dog therapy!
Many have asked what we need and I can honestly say nothing at all. The commercials for St. Jude are true. Families don't have to pay anything.
We have set up this team as another way for anyone to help. All donations go straight to St. Jude.
Stevie will be designing the St. Jude shirt for his team this year!
Please help me reach my goal not just for Stevie but for all the future kids who will be at St. Jude!
