Why We Support St. Jude
Alexis's A-Team
Though she was not a patient at St. Jude, we walk to honor the life and legacy of Alexis S. Fegan. She was a beautiful person inside and out and always looked for ways to help others.. Alexis was known for her amazing attitude and impressive work ethic that was complimented with her gregarious smile and fun loving spirit. She was a former cheerleader and co-captain on her high school volleyball team when she discovered a lump in her leg during the fall of her senior year. That lump was eventually diagnosed as Synovial Cell Sarcoma. Alexis fought hard throughout the school year to maintain a sense of normalcy while getting treatment. She was an honor student and maintained her GPA all while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Alexis completed all of her cancer treatments by the spring of her senior year and was declared cancer free in late April 2015. She was able to graduate from high school on time and subsequently enrolled at Appalachian State University, where she thrived as she pursued a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. Alexis had plans to become an attorney. While in college, she was able to achieve numerous accolades such as being both a Chancellor’s and Dean’s list recipient. She was also actively involved in several organizations including the W. H. Plemmons Leader Fellows, where she served on the Plemmons Advisory council, as well as the Minority Women’s Leadership Circle (MWLC), Sigma Lambda Academic Honor Society, and Black Student Association (BSA). She served in the capacity of Senator of the Student Government Association (SGA) and earned the positions of Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader (SOUL) and University Housing Resident Assistant (RA). Alexis was also a proud member of the Rho Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she held the position of Service and Philanthropy Chair.
Sadly, Alexis’s cancer re-emerged at the end of her sophomore year in college. She continued to fight and fought all the way until her passing in the fall of 2017.
Alexis touched many during her time on earth, as evident in the official renaming of The Plemmons Scholars Leadership & Legacy Award to the "Alexis S. Fegan Legacy Award" at Appalachian State University in honor of her and the impact she made in her two years there as a student.
Alexis’s A-Team continues to honor and remember Alexis by assisting St. Jude in providing help to as many other children as possible. We walk to help give those children a fighting chance to beat dreaded childhood diseases so that they, too, can make an impact in the lives of others while they realize and achieve their dreams.
