We mourn the loss of a beloved St. Jude champion, Phil Donahue. Our hearts are with Marlo Thomas, his wife of 44 years and St. Jude National Outreach Director, his children and all who knew and loved him.
The world knew Phil as a pioneer in American television. As the creator of The Phil Donahue Show, he shaped the format of the modern talk show, allowing the audience to interact with his guests on a variety of issues spanning entertainment to politics. He especially recognized women who were active voices in their work, communities and on social issues. In fact, he first met Marlo during an interview on his show.
During his career, Phil won nine Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Host in a Talk or Service Series, and he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Emmy in 1996. He also won the distinguished Peabody Award in 1980. In 2024, he received the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Throughout the years, Phil visited St. Jude to spend time with the children and their families as well as participated in numerous dinners and galas and events such as the FedEx St. Jude Championship PGA TOUR golf tournament. Phil and Marlo often hosted corporate partners in their home. Phil demonstrated his unwavering devotion to St. Jude and the children who turn to St. Jude for help and hope. He made connections with patients so easily and greeted everyone at St. Jude with his trademark curiosity and kindness.
Danny Thomas often said that when he welcomed Phil into his family, he gained both a son-in-law and a fundraiser. He leaves a lasting legacy that has impacted so many, and we will never forget his caring spirit.
