When my brother Matt was 11, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Over the next few years he received world class care from Melbourne’s Royal Children's Hospital, as well as support for the family from Ronald McDonald House, and a community through Challenge Cancer Support network.
Even with all of this support - the strain on my parents was enormous. Especially as multiple rounds of treatment worked, then didn’t.
I can’t imagine the agony of families going through this and also having to worry about the mountain of bills that come with intensive medical treatments, travel and accommodation.
St Jude covers all that - and research into ending childhood cancer.
I’m so thrilled to be doing this NY Marathon with friends and colleagues as team #JustDewitt.
Brandon Dewitt, the cofounder of MX, was a tireless fundraiser for St Jude, taking the focus from his own battle with cancer and investing his time and money in helping others.
On race day we will endeavor to represent the strength and goodness of Brandon, and Matt, and so many who left us far too early.
Some details about St Jude:
- Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food - because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
- Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
- St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands
