More about Caleb the Superhero:
Caleb was just like any other 3 year old. He loved playing outside, attending pre-school and playing t-ball, soccer and bowling. But that all changed on Aug. 30, 2018. What started off as a normal morning quickly turned into a day that changed our lives forever. In an instant Caleb went from playing with his brother and getting ready for school, to very quiet and dazed. He was taken by ambulance to Brandon Hospital's pediatric ER, where they found a large mass on his brain. He was then airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Pete where he had brain surgery the next day. A little over a week later we received the diagnosis of AT/RT, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
Not much is known about the treatment for AT/RT, so locally in Tampa, Caleb's odds were not very strong. Luckily, Caleb's parents quickly found a specialist at St. Jude. With less than 4 days notice, the whole family moved to Memphis to seek treatment at St. Jude. The doctor there that specializes in AT/RT is conducting a clinical trial drug that has been effective in decreasing the rate of recurrence, and therefore improving the chance of long term survival. This trial was not available in Tampa since it is still in the testing phase. By taking part in the clinic trial we are helping St. Jude to further their research on AT/RT. St. Jude shares all of their research openly with other hospitals, so giving to St. Jude is giving to all children with cancer, including Tampa families like ours.
