Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children. Yet, only four percent of national cancer researchfunding is allocated for pediatrics. You are probably wondering: Why do I care so much? Why does it matter to me?
In January of 2019, my younger brother lost his battle against leukemia after numerous rounds of chemotherapy, two failed transplants, and countless side effects and complications. Throughout his journey, I witnessed firsthand, the heartbreaking struggles and sufferings pediatric cancer patients endured. This inspired me to start Sunshine Club at Diamond Bar High School. The primary mission is to brighten the lives of pediatric cancer patients and to raise awareness in our community, so people are more motivated to contribute towards finding a cure.
September is childhood cancer awareness month. My club is taking this opportunity to bring attention to lack of funding for pediatric cancer research and to raise money for this worthy cause. After careful considerations, Sunshine Club decided to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It is the only research hospital in the nation to conduct cutting edge studies toward finding a cure and to provide free quality care.
Every one out of eight children diagnosed with cancer loses their battle. Not in a million years, would I have ever imagined losing my brother to cancer. Now, I truly believe life is unpredictable and finding a cure for cancer is more pressing than ever.
