In October 2017, my niece, Sascha, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Sascha underwent brain surgery at Mayo and within a few weeks left her home in Wisconsin for Tennessee so as to be under the care and support of St Jude.
Sascha spent the rest of 2017 and nearly ten more months of 2018 at St. Jude. I ran the Memphis to Peoria run in 2018 in honor of Sascha.
This run is amazing. The love, the hope, the spirit. It brings all the feels. And, it raises the money necessary to keep St Jude doing what it’s doing.
Did you know St Jude shares all their research and findings with other doctors and hospitals around the world?! In this day and age, that’s hard to come by. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago!
As irony would have it, I was cheered on by Sascha during the 2018 run. Here we had been cheering for her, yet she came out to cheer us on. But I have to admit – as AWESOME as that was, it was even better when we got to hang out at Thanksgiving… and Christmas… and birthdays…
Because of St Jude, Sascha came home and stayed home! She is the strongest child I know. And because of St Jude, she continues to be.
I cannot pretend to know what it feels like to be a parent watching their child undergo such a disease. I am so thankful for all St Jude has done for our family and all the families battling cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Please support me and this year’s St Jude Memphis to Peoria run…and even more, please help support the families and children of St Jude by making a donation.
