Dearest Friends and Family,
This year will mark my 13th year completing the journey from Memphis to Peoria as a St. Jude Runner! It is always hard to believe it is that time of year again. We have had a jam-packed year, so I will update all of you!
Cody and I’s love of travel has only increased over the last year. We visited the Pacific Northwest by spending a long weekend over the 4th of July in Portland, OR and the coast. I was lucky enough to spend 3 weekends celebrating my 30th birthday: one with my parents at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios to see Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, one with Cody in NYC where he surprised me with Hamilton tickets, and finally one with some of my best friends in Kansas City. In November, we spent our 1st anniversary weekend attending another wedding for Cody’s coworker in Fresno, CA. Finally, over Thanksgiving week and the week after, we spent 16 days in Patagonia! We visited 6 different towns/cities in Chile and Argentina and hiked several amazing sights including our favorite, Mt. Fitzroy (which you may recognize from the Patagonia clothing brand logo!). We finished off this trip of a lifetime with a weekend in Buenos Aires which is truly a beautiful city. With the COVID-19 quarantine, many of our spring and early summer travel plans have been cancelled/postponed, but we hope to plan another big international trip this fall. Stay tuned!
We are still loving Atlanta and both of our jobs - I am still at Kaiser Permanente and Cody with Caterpillar. Cody is signed up for his 4th St. Jude St. Louis to Peoria Run this year as well! His brother, Benny, is a former St. Jude patient who has also done the St. Louis run for several years. It is such a unique and amazing experience to do this event together but separately for our own meaningful reasons, and it is still one of my favorite parts of this event.
As a lot of you probably already know, my brother, Dusty Pautler, lost his battle in 1991 at the age of 12 to ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) after relapsing twice. Although I was just an infant when he passed away, I know his spirit watches over me as I train for this strenuous event. The survival rate in 1962 (when St. Jude first opened its doors) was less than 4% ALL, the most common type of childhood cancer. But thanks to the generosity of people like you, there is a five-year survival rate of over 94%. St. Jude is rewriting medical textbooks – now 9 out of every 10 children with ALL will survive. In fact, St. Jude has increased the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80% since 1962.
But the fight is certainly not over yet. Childhood cancer continues to kill more U.S. children over 1 year of age than any other disease. St. Jude has over 7,500 active patients who are seen at least yearly, and it will cost $1 billion to operate the hospital this year.
St. Jude is such a great organization and is extremely important to my family and I. Children and their families are never turned away because of race, religion, or the inability to pay. Families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. I hope you will join me in saving the lives of children by contributing to the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run. It is through contributions like yours, that this event is a success for the children of St. Jude year after year. You can donate by mailing me a check to the address below or online via this website. The Memphis runners are scheduled to leave Peoria on the morning of July 14th and will arrive back at the Civic Center on the evening of July 18. Please feel free to call/text me at 309- 657-4566, if you have any questions regarding the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run. Thank you for your support of the kids of St. Jude!
For the kids,
