Every single day a family walks through the front doors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to hear the words “your child, your brother, your sister, your grandchild, your friend, your loved one has cancer.” And right then, in the blink of an eye, life as you know it changes forever. Your entire world stops spinning and to be honest it never really starts up again. Our family’s world stopped spinning on March 7, 2014. March 7th was a day that Mom, Dad and Big Brother were supposed to be packing for next week’s Spring Break vacation and Big Sister was supposed to be getting ready for her sorority formal. It was the day before Carson Elizabeth’s 8th birthday, when what was thought to be growing pains in her knee turned into the word osteosarcoma and a doctor appointment at St. Jude. Osteosarcoma, which we had never even heard of until that day, quickly became the driving force in all of our lives.
Three days later, Carson Elizabeth was a patient at St. Jude with a treatment plan in place. She underwent treatment for 16 months where she went through 36 rounds of chemotherapy, multiple rounds of radiation, 3 lung thoracotomies and 1 limb sparing surgery to get rid of the bone cancer that was invading her body. Our entire family cried, prayed, laughed and lived at St. Jude together as we watch our baby girl fight for her life with a team of doctors, nurses, therapists and staff standing behind her. On June 26, 2015, Carson Elizabeth flew to Heaven where she could finally be cancer-free.
Our family continues to support St. Jude because it’s what Carson would have wanted us to do. For six years now, we have trained, run and most importantly fundraised in her honor. No child and their family should ever have to endure the pain that Carson went through, or the pain that our family has felt every single day since then. We long for the day that Danny Thomas envisioned where “No child should die in the dawn of life.” We also truly believe that St. Jude is the place that will make that dream come true. St. Jude is a place without boundaries or limitations, there is only relentless care for every single child that walks through its doors.
With your support, we are on a mission to stand alongside St. Jude to end childhood cancer. Carson truly believed that every single penny mattered when it came to giving back to St. Jude. So, we urge you to join our fight in honor of Carson Elizabeth’s memory. Whether it is one penny or a million pennies, we have faith that one day a family will walk through the front doors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and be blessed by it.
“Run with the faith of a child so that one day ALL children may cross The Finish Line.”
