I had been a competitive athlete through college- my eating wasn’t always the healthiest- but I was training a fair bit. After college the training stopped- but the eating didn’t and I began to pack on the pounds. I really never felt sick for an extended period of time, and I was blessed that most of my health markers (BP, cholesterol, A1C, etc) were never really significantly off mark. BUT- obviously I was not as healthy as I could be and I was checking a lot of boxes when it came to risk factors for many chronic diseases.
About 2 years ago I decided that enough was enough. I needed to do something to improve my health- and increase the likelihood that I would be around for my wife and my kids. I made some pretty big changes that have contributed to significant weight loss. I am now at a point where in my mid-40s I am probably the healthiest that I have ever been. I feel 10 years younger and have so much more energy.
As a part of my weight loss journey- I decided to train and run 13 half-marathons in 13 months. Not only is there some symmetry in racing just over 13 miles, 13 times, in 13 months- the total number of miles that I would complete in these races would be roughly equal the number of pounds that I lost during my weight loss journey.
I am the healthiest I have ever been and have a healthy wife and three healthy kids. I am aware that not everyone is as fortunate as I am. I would like to turn my quest in meeting my personal goal into being a small part of helping a worthy organization reach their goals of helping sick kids and their families. For my 13th and final leg of this quest- I decided that I would run in the St Jude Memphis Half-Marathon and raise money to help with the battle against childhood cancer.
Would you consider joining me in supporting St. Jude by giving as a part of my fundraising effort? I have set a goal of raising $3000 during this process. I am confident that with your help we can meet or exceed this goal. In my 13 half-marathons I will run 170.3 miles. Would you consider giving: a dollar per mile- $170.30? 50 cents per mile- $85.15? a dime per mile- $17.03?
Thank you for joining me on my journey- and even more thanks for helping the kids of St. Jude!
Did you know:
- Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food - because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
- Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude is working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90%, and they won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
- St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.
Donate today to help me reach my goal. Even when the race is over, the fight to end childhood cancer continues.
