My sister Molly lit up a room with her kindness, humor and smarts and was a blessing to our family for the (almost) 12 years we got to spend with her. January 2004, at 11 years-old she was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and passed away 3 weeks later on our mom's birthday, February 7, 2004. I was only 7 at the time but knew what an impact her passing would have on me and my family. God played a big role in Molly's story and I believe He has helped us find ways to give back in remembrance of Molly. Just as Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital found a way to help others after praying to St. Jude Thaddeus. Molly and I both attended an all-girls catholic school in St. Louis and one of the school's founders, St. Francis De Sales is known for his writings and now famous quotes. In the weeks preceding Molly's illness and death her 6th grade class was assigned to an art project using De Sales quotes. Her assigned quote was "nothing can hurt you God is near". This quickly became the foundation of her illness, treatment, and later her passing.
Molly continues to shape who I am today and is a motivating factor behind how and what I choose to dedicate my time to. One of my main dedications over the past few years has been to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude cares for over 8600 patients each year and those patients never receive a bill for their treatment. From housing, to meals, to treatment and travel St. Jude covers it all--and all the money is from donations. Although Molly wasn't treated at St. Jude, I am incredibly encouraged by their work on advancing pediatric cancer treatments and I am positive that their work has helped thousands of sisters spend more time together.
I will be running the New York City Marathon for St. Jude with my mom, Mary in 2023! I have vowed to St. Jude to raise money for the kids who need it the most and will be running in memory of Molly. Any donation is greatly appreciated!
