I am choosing to run the St. Jude Marathon in honor of my daughter, Charlotte "ChaCha" Corwin, who was diagnosed with leukemia on September 21, 2017, and has been treated at St. Jude since that day.
My family has never received a single bill from St. Jude for anything--not for meals, lodging, or the life-saving care that Charlotte has received. In fact, St. Jude even pays for our travel expenses to Memphis and back.
The day Charlotte was diagnosed, she took a 7.5-hour ambulance ride from Peoria to Memphis. A few months later, a bill arrived at our home from the private ambulance company for over $11,000, even though Charlotte was covered under two different health insurance plans. I took the bill in to St. Jude at Charlotte's next appointment and set it on the receptionist's desk. She said not to worry about it. I've never seen the bill or even been asked about it again.
Periodically, I receive other letters from my health insurance company letting me know that they're not going to cover some of the medicine or life-saving treatments Charlotte receives through St. Jude. I throw those letters right in the trash knowing I don't need to worry about it because I will never receive a bill from St. Jude. Like St. Jude says, all I need to worry about is helping my child live.
Thank you for supporting my run in honor of Charlotte. Thank you even more for supporting ChaCha and all the kids of St. Jude.
