Carson Elizabeth's journey is one of courage, bravery and hope. Carson spent the last 16 months of her life at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital after she was diagnosed the day before her 8th birthday with a rare bone tumor, osteosarcoma. Carson endured more in her too short life than any one should ever have to endure. 36 rounds of chemotherapy she never got to finish, 1 limb sparing surgery, 3 lung thoracotomies, 1 surgery to move her heart over to reach the cancer growing behind it, 3 other surgeries, and multiple rounds of radiation.
Carson had a special sparkle about her that everyone was drawn to. She touched every doctor, nurse, and staff member she came into contact with at St. Jude. And, each person at St. Jude in turn touched Carson and my entire family.
St. Jude has now become our family, even still to this day. There will never be adequate words to describe the people that work there and the love and compassion they showered upon my family and the hundreds of families that walk through the doors each and every day. St. Jude is like a beacon in the night that is shining brightly, giving hope and comfort to families in their darkest hours.
Carson's journey here on earth has now ended, but I will forever carry in my heart the life lessons she taught me. She believed that every penny counted when it came to giving to St. Jude so that other children would one day not have to endure what Carson went through. And, to enjoy each and every day you are given and remember to focus on the things that matter most in life.
I will forever spread the message of St. Jude and what it has meant to me and still does today. For without this wonderful hospital, in my heart I know that I would not have been given the last 16 months of my daughter's life.
