Almost 17 years ago, I became part of the St Jude family when my youngest daughter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and we were referred to St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis for treatment. I was aware of the commercials and TV specials. I had watched them and cried for the kids and their families, never knowing that one day we'd be a part of that culture. Because I was familiar with St. Jude through their media, I was also aware that no family ever receives a bill for treatment. This is so true, but so much more than that, St Jude also pays for travel, room and food while you are at the hospital, provides a school for children to attend while they are in Memphis, and shares their research successes freely with other hospitals throughout the world.
Seventeen years later, my daughter is a successful restaurant manager in Nashville. She's a college graduate, an aunt to 5 adorable kiddoes, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a talented, sassy, confident survivor of childhood cancer. She is a graduate St Jude patient and is followed in the LIFE study that monitors long term effects of treatment on childhood cancer survivors.
I have long since aged out of being a St. Jude parent. I am now a regular parent and grandma. There is a whole new generation of mom's and dad's in Memphis now who were still in school when my daughter was in treatment. This is why, year after year, I keep coming back to run as a St Jude Hero. This is why I continue to share our story and raise money for St Jude. I will keep on until there are only regular kids and regular parents and childhood cancer is a thing of the past.
Thank you for your continued support! Every donation is fantastic no matter if it is $1 or $1000.
You are making a difference!
Did you know:
- Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food - because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
- Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
- St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.
Donate today to help me reach my goal. Even when the race is over, the fight to end childhood cancer continues.
