Friends, family and colleagues are mourning the loss of David L. McKee, longtime chief operating officer of ALSAC, who for 35 years helped lead the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
McKee, 66, passed away Friday evening after a car accident in the Memphis area.
“David McKee was so much more than one of the world’s great philanthropic leaders,” said Rick Shadyac, ALSAC CEO. “He was a dear friend and mentor to me and many others who worked with him during his 35-year career at ALSAC. He also was a passionate advocate for the patients of St. Jude and for children everywhere who have benefitted from our work. We have lost one of the icons of our organization, and his family is in our hearts and prayers.”
McKee joined ALSAC in 1977 and served in a variety of leadership roles during his years at ALSAC, including as interim chief executive officer, chief operating officer and senior executive vice president. He was instrumental in creating many of ALSAC’s fundraising programs and initiatives, including starting the St. Jude Country Cares radio program.
In 2011, McKee was named the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by Fundraising Success magazine. He helped lead ALSAC to record growth and reach its current status as the second largest health care charity in the United States.
McKee is survived by his wife, Portia; children, David McKee of Collierville, April Fowler of Arlington, and Amanda Madison of Memphis; grandchildren, Charlie Madison, Emily Madison and Caroline McKee; brother, Daun McKee of Fleetwood, Pa.; and sister, Ellen Long of Christianburg, Va.

McKee Family,
I returned to work this morning after being gone from maternity leave to read my last message from Dave. It was a beautiful message reminding me to cherish my time with my kiddos. Each word so perfectly filled with his spirit. I will forever be grateful for the time I had to work with Dave and most admired the way he loved each of you. May God keep you in the palm of His hand during this time and always. Best, Emily |

Losing Dave is losing family. He was such a valued part of the St. Jude Story, St. Jude Family, and my family. He truly was the glue to hold ALSAC together during rough patches and never let Danny's dream or Mr. Shadyac's dream ever get lost in the minutia. When we lost Mr. Shadyac we looked to Dave for strength and guidance. In his own right, Dave leaves us a legacy of selflessness, of a pure heart, and virtue. Our lives will never be the same without him and our hearts will always be better because of him. Rest in peace, dearest Dave. All our love and prayers to the family. Lori King Stibb and family

It was both a pleasure and an honor to work with and for Dave McKee. His quiet leadership coupled with his ability to make everyone feel valued resulted in a staff of hundreds that held him in the highest regard.
Dave was a mentor, a leader and a friend to so many. Rest In Peace, Friend. |

I am so thankful for all of the years we had Dave; his gift of connecting to each person he met, his fantastic sence of humor, and his lazer focus on the core of an issue. I am inspired to continue his legacy and honor his memory in the best way I can, with all my heart. I know he will be watching us from above, with Danny.
