My good friend, Chase Thornton, and I will be pushing my 4 year old niece in the Rock 'n' Roll Nashville 1/2 Marathon. Nancy Jo, or "Nan" as we call her, lives with Myelomeningocele (Spina Bifida). She was diagnosed at 19 weeks gestation, and underwent fetal surgery at 25 weeks gestation. She was born prematurely (31 weeks), weighing just 3lbs 12oz. Despite this surgery and multiple following procedures, she still has limited mobility and sensation below her waist due to the effects on her spine (from L3-S1). She can crawl and is learning to stand and take some steps with the help of some specialized equipment. But for now, she mostly uses her wheelchair to get around.
Regardless of these complications and obstacles, Nan has continued to grow in both strength and joy. She has become the source of inspiration to myself and anyone who comes in contact with her. It is with this inspiration in mind that we're choosing to run for more than ourselves. We're running for kids who might be too sick to run today, but who could one day be running alongside us because of the money we raised to help find a cure. So please support Team Nan as we race to the finish line in support of St Jude Children's Research Hospital!
