As a way to honor, celebrate, and extend the compassionate spirit of my beloved husband Aaron Churder, I have chosen to devote my life to completing what he was not able to accomplish in his own. Among the many beautiful and altruistic endeavors found on his personal bucket list, it would give me the most absolute pleasure to achieve both #10 and #47 simultaneously: to run a marathon, and to donate to a children’s hospital.
Although there are countless facilities that strive to deliver the best healthcare to children in need, some even in my own backyard, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee has achieved a special place in my heart. Unlike any other hospital, St. Jude relies almost exclusively on funding from individual donors. It is because of these kind-hearted and generous contributions that families never have to feel the financial burden of their child’s hospital stay. St. Jude also leads our nation in the advancement of cures, prevention, research, and the treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases. In fact, therapies developed at St. Jude’s research facility have pushed the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since opening more than 50 years ago.
In June of this year, I will be participating in San Diego’s Rock’n’Roll Marathon Weekend as a St. Jude Hero and fundraising throughout my training for their silver level marathon. I have chosen to run in this marathon not only to preserve Aaron’s loving memory and to challenge myself, but to use the blessings I have been given in my life to affect positive change in the lives of others. I will be running for children who are too ill to run today, but with our commitment to charity, could one day be running alongside us in the fight against childhood cancer.
I am truly lucky to have had Aaron in my life, to have himbe the father of my children, and my best friend for so manywonderful years. Please consider donating to my cause and help me pass on Aaron’s kindness and generosity to those who absolutely need it the most.
On behalf of my family and all those in the care of St. Jude Children’s Hospital,
thank you for your faith, compassion, and good-will.
With love forever,
Christine and Aaron Churder
