As many of you know, our 12 year-old nephew and Godson, Garrett Helms, was a patient at St. Jude for nearly 2 years, where he received countless chemotherapy and radiation treatments, surgeries, biopsies, and many other forms of treatment. St. Jude was amazing and did everything feasible to treat and save him, but tragically, Garrett passed away on October 25th, 2015 following his courageous battle with retinoblastoma. This rare childhood cancer effects the eye and there is still much research and development to be done to save those children that are diagnosed with this evil disease. As a way to honor and remember Garrett, David and I will be participating again in the St. Jude Rock n Roll Marathon Weekend, running on Saturday, April 29.
Though difficult today, our family aspires to turn the loss of Garrett into an uplifting legacy of helping others who may encounter childhood cancer in the future. Will you please consider following Garrett’s lead? Even after he passed away, Garrett and his parents left the world a tremendous gift – his tumor was donated to St. Jude so that research doctors could study retinoblastoma with the hope of finding a cure. But, funding for this type of potentially life-saving research depends on generous donations from people like you and me. I would like to please request your support as a way to honor Garrett’s memory, and as a means of helping St. Jude to continue with its mission of eradicating childhood cancer. Together, we CAN make a difference!
