Cancer has touched my life in so many ways over the years. My journey started as a caregiver to my Grandmother and Sister who both lost their couregous battle to this disease in 2000. Soon after the death of my mother-in-law to this disease, I became an office coordinator at a local Oncology office and had the privelage of working with numerous patients and families in their journey of this disease. Some of the patients were in high school and did not live to experience the milestone of graduation. I have witnessed first hand the devistation that comes with this disease and worries of the financial burdens it brings. For some, treatment was no longer an option because they did not have insurance and lost their medical assistance. Their bills stacked up because they could no longer work and the electric was cut off and their homes were no longer condusive for them to live in and fight their battle with cancer.
My Grandmother's last words of wisdom to me before she started her joureny were "you have an amazing gift of giving to others." So in her honor, I want to share my gift of giving to the children and families at St. Jude. As a mother of 3, I know that on any given day my children could receive this haunting diagnosis. I want to take my experiences as a former volunteer with the American Cancer Society and now raise funds and educate the community about St. Jude.
