In December 2015, I ran my first race benefiting St. Jude. It was the St. Jude Memphis 5K because I needed something to do with my time while my husband, Jeremy, ran the marathon. While in Memphis, we had the opportunity to tour the St. Jude campus. That tour changed me.
I have heard it said that everyone who tours the hospital has a "St. Jude moment". That moment for me was hearing that a local fertility clinic in the Memphis area assists patients who have reached sexual maturity by harvesting and freezing their eggs and sperm. Thus giving them the opportunity to have biological children after their treatments, which could leave them infertile, are completed. This cemented for me a desire to raise money to give further hope to young patients like them.
I am now training to run my first half marathon to help me accomplish my goals of losing weight, getting healthier, and being able to run a double-digit distance. :) Why should I be the only one to benefit from this hard work though? That's why I'm choosing to #runforacause to support the families that are given so much hope through St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
My fundraising goal is initially $500 because most of those close to me have already donated to my husband's fundraising goal. However, ultimately, I'd like to raise at least $1,000 for St. Jude as part of the training for this race.
The funds you generously donate to St. Jude are used to assist in these efforts:
- Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food -- because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
- Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
Please donate and help me reach my goal!
