I run for a lot of reasons. Here are a few:
I run because we believe in St Jude and what they do.
I run because we have a strong connection to St Jude, it's staff, patients and families.
I run, because my daughter couldn't.
In May of 2008, we became a St Jude family, after our 9 year old daughter, Sydney, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. I say "family" because that's exactly what they became to us.
Sydney WON her battle with cancer on the day she went to heaven. November 7, 2009. Since that time, my wife Tasha and I have become very active as volunteers at St Jude. We live in the Nashville area (originally from Rockford, IL where Sydney was born, raised & died)...but make the drive to Memphis down I-40 about every 6 weeks to serve on the Family Advisory Council or FCC (Family Centered Care). We are members of the QoL (Quality of Life) Steering Council. We are bereaved parent mentors & educators. We get the joy of working directly with the amazing St Jude staff to help equip & train them to best deal with the families of St Jude. Basically, even though our daughter died, we still believe in what St Jude does and who they are. Here are a couple of reasons why:
- Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food -- because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
- Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
And for so many more reasons.
Sydney loved St Jude. She loved the patients. She loved the staff. She loved Jesus. I think all of that love needs to continue to be put into action, and so, since SHE can't run, I will.
Please consider donating toward our goal. Let's surpass it. Let's blow the lid off it! Let's help Sydney's legacy LOVE on!
