When patients and families arrive at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, they’re enfolded in a warm blanket of care and concern. Breathing a sigh of relief, they learn they’ll never receive a bill for housing, food or treatment. They discover their St. Jude family will walk beside them every step of the journey to help alleviate their stress and assuage their worries.
Family and friends, I can never thank you enough for your repeated support of our team and this cause. Cancer is awful. No child should have to fight it, and no parent should have to watch their child endure it. Because of you, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is working towards ensuring that every child, every single one, survives the battle and goes on to live a healthy life.
The first weekend of December is this year’s St. Jude Marathon Weekend. We will be there. We will be joyful, we will cry, we will be inspired and we will be sad. As we run through the gates of the hospital on Saturday, we will be high fived by the multitudes of parents who come out to cheer us on in our run and in their fight.
Friday night begins with a dinner for the fundraisers. At the dinner we listen to a family tell us about their journey from diagnosis through their ongoing treatment at St. Jude Hospital. St. Jude’s CEO shares St. Jude stories and talks about the amazing St. Jude organization. He also runs, and there is inspiring video from last year’s finish line as he crossed over, and then went back to run in with others who needed assistance crossing that line.
On Saturday morning we run. Last year there were over 26,000 runners from 49 states and 26 countries, and there were 40,000 spectators cheering us on. It is an amazing experience, and I encourage you to join us at some point in your future. This year our team will have runners in the 5K, the 10K and the half marathon. I was proud to set a new personal best time at last year’s half marathon; be assured that I’m going to beat that time on 12/1/18. If these precious children can fight cancer, I can run.
Thanks to family and friends like you, the 2017 Marathon Weekend raised over $10M. Will you help again? A $5 donation or a $10 one or a $25 one or any amount is appreciated because the cause is exceptionally important. Let’s fight the fight together.
