This sweet photo above sums up why I fundraise for St. Jude. No one should have to experience cancer - the surgery, the chemo, radiation, fighting for your life -- and a dear child having to go through it is simply heartbreaking.
My family and I will once again attend the St. Jude Marathon Weekend on December 1-3. I say this every year: I can't begin to express the joy and inspiration and sadness and hope that my family and I feel during this weekend.
Friday night begins with a dinner for the fundraisers. At the dinner we listen to a family tell us about their journey from diagnosis through their ongoing treatment at St. Jude Hospital. Families never receive a single bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food. This organization is about treating young cancer patients and their families in every way, and they want families to focus on their children getting well and to not have to worry about medical bills. Also so important: St. Jude is a research hospital doing all they can to find a cure for childhood cancers, and they share their findings with other hospitals at no cost. St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate for childhood cancer from less than 20% when they first opened their doors to 80% today. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer. Your donations are working!
On Saturday morning we run. This year our team will have runners in the 5K, the half and the full marathons. This will be my fifth half marathon, and I'm training in order to set a new personal record. If these precious children can fight cancer, I can run hard and fast. I wish each of you could experience the feeling of running through the gates of St. Jude Hospital where children are fighting for their lives. Running is a joyous way of cheering them on in their daily battle.
Saturday night our team goes out for Memphis barbeque. There will be some limping and sore muscles, and everyone will have an inspiring story to share from their morning run.
The 2016 St. Jude Marathon Weekend raised $10.2M, and the 2017 weekend goal is $12M. Will you help us meet our team goal of $15,000 this year? A $5 donation or a $10 one or a $25 one - any amount is appreciated because the cause is exceptionally important. Let's end childhood cancer. Together.
