In December of 2017, I will participate in my sixth St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend in Memphis. This year, I plan to run the Half Marathon and once again raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. My motivation is slightly different this year though. The desire to help children and those families effected by life threatening diseases will always be there, but I want to use this campaign to also honor my father, Robert Bellew, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.
I've known family members and friends who have battled cancer over the years, but never been close enough to fully understand how it truly affects a family...until now. The shock of sitting with my family and hearing that diagnosis is something I can't describe, but will always remember. It is life changing! As a son, I want to just take it away. I would certainly trade places with him right now. I want to fight...I want to pray...and I want to destroy this disease. I cannot put myself in the shoes of a child battling this disease or a family comforting their child who's taking treatments or living away from their classmates and friends for months at a time. But I do love my family dearly and want nothing more than to remove this disease from my Dad's body. I want to, in my small way, do whatever I can to help completely eliminate cancer and prevent anyone from ever having to take another chemo or radiation treatment or stress over another PET scan, especially a child.
My Dad tells me often, "I hate that you're having to go through this." And while I wouldn't have it any other way than to be by his side, I understand. He's always put others before himself and this is no different. And it's that thought I'll carry with me forever. It's the motivation I'll use this year to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I can think of no better way to honor my father and his fight against the Big C but to use this opportunity to support this wonderful cause.
My goal for 2017 is to raise $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It's a lofty goal, but with your support I have no doubt we can get there. Please consider a small donation to the life saving work going on at St. Jude. Thank you, in advance! And thank you to all of you who have supported me and this cause over the years!
