It's that time again, Team SuperSam!! Time to start fundraising and to get ready for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon! I am again raising funds as a St. Jude Hero to support St. Jude's lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children. I need your support to help me reach my fundraising goal for the kids of St. Jude. On December 1, I will again travel to Memphis, TN, along with other members of Team SuperSam, for our ninth time, to participate in the 10k portion of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon on Dec. 2, 2017, the 11 year anniversary of the weekend Sam received his fateful diagnosis. We are fundraising to support St. Jude, and help ensure that eventually no child will have to go through what Sam did.
As most of you know, we lost our precious son, Sam, to DIPG on February 25, 2008. For the duration of Sam's illness, he demonstrated all the qualities of a true superhero: bravery, courage, empathy for others, superhuman strength, and lots and lots of endurance. Throughout his entire ordeal, Sam became an inspiration to so many people, young and old, friends and strangers. During his course of treatment, Sam received 33 radiation sessions, various chemotherapy drugs, steroids, hair loss, local doctors appointments as well as follow up, monthly visits to St. Jude, countless needle picks, and he quickly became wise beyond his 4 1/2 years. In spite of these new, awful circumstances that became Sam's "normal", his carefree spirit and bright smile remained constant.
While involved in a rigorous treatment plan, and fighting the biggest villian (cancer) this little superhero would ever face, his attitude stayed positive. Sam traveled, vacationed, started kindergarten, learned, played sports, enjoyed his stuffed animals and superheroes, and loved with all his heart. He truly lived his short little life to its fullest!
Unfortunately, our story didn't have the happy ending where the superhero swoops in at the last second, pounds the evil villian into demise, and everyone goes on their merry way until the next evil force rears it's ugly head. After a long, valiant and courageous battle, a fight worthy of even the most pristine superhero, Sam succombed to the dark, sinister, evil monster that is cancer, specifically DIPG, and earned his superhero cape for eternity.
Some might wonder why I choose to fundraise for St. Jude, when my son wasn't one of the lucky ones who received a cure. The answer is, because someone else's son/daughter might be. I truly believe that because of St. Jude, Sam had a wonderful quality of life right up until the end, and we got to enjoy every precious moment with him. No parent should have to lose a child, or watch their child suffer, and no child should EVER have to fight against such a powerful opponent!
Please consider supporting us by making a donation to my fundraising page! EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS!!
How your donation helps:
- Thanks to donors like you, no family ever pays St. Jude for anything.
- St. Jude will continue to improve the treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases through its groundbreaking research.
I could not do this without the love and support of our family, friends, and even strangers who have let us into their hearts. So from the bottom of mine, thank you so much!!!!
