Dear friends and family,
I am headed back to Memphis again this December for the St Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend for the 8th time! Last year sure was a crazy one with everything that happened to my brother, but thanks be to God, he is doing okay, so Team SFSF is getting ready again to run for the kids of St Jude!
And as in every year thus far, I am again participating as part of Team Smiles For Sophie Forever, headed by our fearless leader, my amazing sister, Emily! As you may all know, Sophie was Emily's first child and devastatingly, she lost Sophie to brain cancer in 2007, more specifically, a DIPG - a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, when Sophie was just 4 years old.
Sadly DIPG is essentially a death sentence as there are no effective treatments and no cure. Sophie was treated with both radiation and chemo at St Jude for 6 weeks shortly following her diagnosis. Although the doctors know the treatment will not cure DIPG, the hope is to give these children a little more time. Unfortunately, Sophie's "little more time" was only 7.5 months. Sophie passed away from DIPG on October 6, 2007.
My sister, Emily, vowed to do anything and everything she could to help raise awareness and money so that one day, no child will have to face the monster that is DIPG. Since her first year participating in the Memphis Marathon Weekend in 2008, Emily has returned each year to run in memory of Sweet Sophie and to raise money for St Jude and this year's race will be her tenth!! We are convinced St Jude will be in the forefront of finding a cure for this deadly disease so this is the least we can do to be a part of that research and a some-day cure!!
So, please consider joining in on our fight and donate on my behalf and in support of Team SFSF, as we head to St Jude to "race towards freedom from pediatric cancer!"
